About Andrian Kurniady

Curriculum Vitae | Interests and Skills

While some details may have been forgotten or redacted, my early childhood was spent in Pontianak until 1992 when our family moved to Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. My elementary education was taken in Abdi Siswa Elementary School, from year 1993 to 1999. I then continued to Sang Timur Junior High and then Sang Timur Senior High (both in Jakarta, of course), and graduated in 2005. I then studied in Bina Nusantara International, in the Computer Science major and graduated in 2009. Since then, I have been working for an amazing company, Google, in Sydney, Australia, as a Software Engineer in Test.

I found myself to be interested in computers since I was a child, about in the year 1991, when we bought a PC with 286 processor for use at home. I started learning programming when I was in the 1st or 2nd grade of elementary school (if I remembered it correctly) with the BASIC programming language in Quick Basic. I started to play with Visual Basic when I was on the 3rd or 4th grade until I was in the 2nd or 3rd grade of Junior High and decided to leave behind the Visual Basic, moving to C/C++ as a better language.

About one year after that, I joined my first computer competition held by Optima Solusindo Informatika, and won the 2nd place in Microsoft PowerPoint competition but also 1st place in Visual Basic competition. The Visual Basic competition was open for public and I was very delighted to know that we (me + two friends of mine) are the only team from Junior High and we won against the Senior High students. Not a bad result for my first computer competition.

The more serious competitions come when I was in High School, being the first algorithm / programming competition that I joined was the Kompetisi Pemrograman Komputer BiNus (KPKB) 2002, in which I won nothing.

Feeling that I have my talent in algorithm, I joined the National Science Olympiad (OSN) of Indonesia - Informatics division in 2003 and won a Silver Medal (6th place, too close to the Gold which was for the 1st-5th place…). I started learning Pascal programming language in the preparation for that OSN. The medal entitled me to join the selection process for Tim Olimpiade Komputer Indonesia (TOKI), which selects four students to be sent to the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI).

A few months after the OSN, I participated in the Bina Nusantara Programming Contest for High School students (BNPC-HS 2003) and won a gold medal (3rd position). One of the award for that competition was a full scholarship for an undergraduate study in informatics in Bina Nusantara (regular). Another award is the chance to represent Indonesia in the AIC AGAMES, which was held in New Delhi, India in December 2003. Our team, unfortunately, ended the winning streak of Indonesian team (who always won the first place) by getting only the second place. The competition was very unsatisfactory though, both being badly organized and having a very questionable problem set. Anyway, it was my first international competition, and my first international travel as well (second, actually, because my parent took me in a vacation to Kuching, Malaysia when I was a baby). In that trip to India, we managed to go to the Taj Mahal too.

The year 2003 was the year when I started learning photography, too. My parents bought me a Nikon Coolpix 5700, a prosumer level digital camera, right before the OSN in 2003. I joined the community in that year as well. Since then, I have taken no less than 23000 photos. (I still try to have a more accurate approximate on how many times I pressed the shutter button). Currently, I use the Nikon D70 DSLR for taking pictures.

The year 2004 was filled with more competitions. Thankfully I managed to advance through the selection process and was officially selected to represent Indonesia in the IOI 2004, which was held in Athens, Greece, a few months after the Athens Olympic Games. My first participation in the IOI resulted in a bronze medal (rank 85). The trip to Athens was a very memorable one, the places we visit were great, and I took about thousands of pictures in there.

Right after I got back, the Bina Nusantara Programming Contest for High School Students (BNPC-HS) - 2004 is waiting. I was given a wildcard to advance directly to the finals, because I was in Athens the time when the qualification round was held. I won the first place in that competition, awarded with another (now pointless) full scholarship, and again appointed to represent Indonesia in another AIC AGAMES, which was held in the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in December 2004. Unfortunately, we did not won any prize, although the problem set was an extremely easy one (so easy that we lost because we did not type fast enough). That was the fifth time I landed on Singapore (the first and second one were only 40 minutes transit each during the flight to India, and two more transits during the trip to and back from Athens), but the first time I really visited Singapore. The city was very neat and clean, with everything seems to be in order. The NTU campus was great, too.

In the year 2005, I graduated from High school and decided to join Bina Nusantara University, which enabled me to participate in the IOI 2005 right before the undergraduate study began. (NTU started in July, which conflicted with the IOI 2005 in August, 2005). In my second IOI, which was held in the lovely town of Nowy Sacz, Poland, I won a silver medal (50th place). The result were not maximal, because we arrived one day late because of the late application for Visa by the ministry. As a result, I scored awfully low in the first competition day, and the perfect score of the second competition day could only won me a silver medal. The trip to Poland was very interesting, but unfortunately I lost most of the great pictures I took there when I lost my portable harddrive.

The IOI 2005 was the last competition I joined as a high school student. A few months after I started studying as an undergraduate student, I participated in the HIMTI Algorithm Programming Contest (HAPC) for Binusians and won the third place.

Less than year later, in May 2006, I won the first place for the same event. I also won a silver medal in the Bina Nusantara Programming Contest - now for College Students (BNPC-CS) 2006 and entitled a place in BiNus’ ACM ICPC team. My first ACM ICPC Regionals was in the Kaohsiung (Taiwan) site in November 2006, with the BiNus’ YoiAC team. We were lucky to get the first place and advance to the ACM ICPC World Final in Japan, 2007. The trip to Kaohsiung was quite short, and we have not got any time have any sightseeing around the city. We managed to have a 5-day visit to Hongkong before returning to Indonesia, though, which was very enjoyable.

I (with the BiNus’ YoiAC team) have just competed in the ACM ICPC World Final 2007, March 12-16, in Tokyo Japan. We managed to get rank 44th out of 88 competing teams by solving 3 out of 10 problems. Although we are still far from being medallists, but the experience and atmosphere of the world final really motivates me to achieve further in this kind of competitions. That was the last competition for YoiAC team, after which Felix graduated and moved to NUS. In June 2007, I joined the ACM ICPC Indonesia National Contest, with team name ‘kurniady’. I got the first place, solving 6 out of 8 problems.

In the fourth quarter of 2007, I attended two more ACM ICPC regional contests. This time naming our team as YoiMon (Me, Timotius Sakti, and Kenny Hartono), we competed in the ACM ICPC Regional - Taipei site and got the fourth place as well as in the ACM ICPC Regional - Singapore site where we got the fifth place. The ranking in Taipei site entitled us a ticket to the ACM ICPC World Final 2008 in Banff Springs, Canada.

We got the 47th place (roughly in the middle of the chart, unfortunately we’re not improving compared to last year) in my second and last ACM ICPC World Finals (after which I’m not eligible to compete in any ICPC regionals and world finals anymore).

In June 2008, I joined the ACM Indonesia National Contest (ACM INC) again with different teammates and got the first place again with the team ‘kurniady’. As I’m graduating the year after, this was the last ACM INC for me.

A few months later, I also joined the Google Code Jam 2008 and advanced to the Asia Pacific (APAC) regional onsite semifinals. The event was held in Google Sydney office, during which I also attend the interviews which landed me a job with Google Sydney as a Software Engineer in Test, to start in the second quarter of 2009 after I finish my studies.

The last competition of the year was the Gemastik (a national IT competition hosted by IT Telkom), in which my team (’kurniady’) placed 2nd, with Binus teams winning all the top 5 spots of the Algorithm category.

Nearing the end of the year, I finally bought my first Lenovo Thinkpad laptop as my older Dell Latitude D510 was not capable to be used anymore for my tasks.

In 2009, I finished my undergraduate degree in Binus University International, majoring in Computer Science (minor in Software Engineering), with the average GPA of 3.89 (magna cum laude). I joined Google Australia in April, positioned as Software Engineer in Test, a role mainly focusing on writing automated test for web applications (and more). My stay in Sydney so far has been quite amazing. I visited the United States for the first time, in my first business trip to the Googleplex in Mountain View. Seems like I’m finally somewhat retired from the programming contests, being ineligible for anything other than Topcoder competitions. I still occasionally participate in Topcoder SRM, but not much else.

Apart from work, I am now enrolled in the University of Sydney in the Master of Information Technology course part-time starting on the second semester of the year. It will take 2 years to graduate, which will be in mid-2012. During the year, I also visited Mountain View again, during which I also took a day wandering around San Francisco, Berkeley, and Oakland. I also attended the Google Test Automation Conference in Hyderabad, India. It has been a little over three years since my previous visit to India, which was to Bangalore on invitation by Google (before I joined the company), which was very different from Hyderabad. In the same year, Google Wave (my project since I joined Google) was discontinued, and I moved on to another project.

Anticipated to be a busy but interesting year, with some travelling, university courses, and of course, work.

In the short future I’ll be mainly focusing on my career in Google. I’m also planning to study part-time in a postgraduate program in computer science or software engineering. In the longer future I see myself coming home and starting my own business.

Kalo jaman gw dulu pas masuk first timer, community BiNus ACM ICPC lagi lesu-lesunya.
Ok d, good luck buat programming competitions berikutnya.
